Getting rid of the Unity Bar and Using Gnome with Ubuntu 12.10

If you’re using Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity or some other desktop environment and want to switch to a complete GNOME 3 desktop experience without installing Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10, you can do this by simply installing a few packages.
Using the instructions below, you won’t just install GNOME Shell, but also the default settings and applications that come with Ubuntu GNOME Remix. There are also some optional steps to install the GNOME 3 applications which are missing from Ubuntu GNOME Remix.

1. Install the Ubuntu GNOME packages

You can simply install the “gnome-shell” package if GNOME Shell is all you want, but if you want the whole GNOME 3 desktop which includes the default applications as well as the default settings, use the command below:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop ubuntu-gnome-default-settings

When prompted, select GDM as the default display manager.

If you already had GDM installed and the package manager didn’t prompt you to choose between LightDM and GDM or you’ve selected LightDM by mistake, you can run the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
And select GDM instead of LightDM (more about changing the display manager, here). You can use LightDM with GNOME Shell, but you won’t get the complete GNOME 3 experience – for instance, GNOME Shell won’t use the new GNOME 3.6 lock screen.

It is also a good idea to remove the “ubuntu-settings” package:

sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-settings

Note that removing this package, the “ubuntu-desktop” package will be removed as well. This is just a meta package and your system shouldn’t be affected by it.
The “ubuntu-settings” package is used to set various Ubuntu defaults, like the window button order, which Rhythmbox plugins are enabled by default and so on.

Optional

2. Install missing GNOME 3 packages

Even though they are part of the default GNOME 3 application stack, GNOME Documents and Boxes are not installed by default with the ubuntu-gnome-desktop package. Install them using the following command:
sudo apt-get install gnome-documents gnome-boxes

Note: Boxes is only available on 64bit due to a bug!

3. Upgrade GNOME Control Center, Nautilus, Totem and other GNOME 3 packages to version 3.6.x

Some packages in the Ubuntu 12.10 repositories aren’t updated to the latest 3.6.x version. So, like we wrote a while back, you can use the GNOME3 PPA to upgrade these applications.

Add the PPA using the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

Then, launch Software Updater from Dash / menu and use it to upgrade your packages.

The packages that will be upgraded once you add the PPA are: GNOME Control Center 3.6.3, Aisleriot 3.6.0, Brasero 3.6.0, Nautilus 3.6.3 and Totem 3.6.2. The PPA also provides Transmission 0.7.1, Transmageddon 0.23 and Sound Juicer 3.5.0.

4. Remove overlay scrollbars

One thing I’ve noticed after following the steps above myself, is that GNOME Shell continues to use Ubuntu’s overlay scrollbars. If you want to use the GNOME 3 scrollbars instead, remove overlay scrollbars using the following command:
sudo apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar*
Once you’re done, restart your computer (a logout may be enough for most stuff, but to get all the changes, including GDM for the login screen, a restart is probably a better idea) and select “GNOME” from the login screen.

Importing a LDD Lego Digital Designer Model into BrickLink

The LDD Manager – a tool I’ve been working on for some time. With it you can analyze and manage your LDD files, and also to upload to BrickLink. There’s also a bunch of other features, like a possibility to search and find all the bricks in LDD Extended Mode, and generate custom Brick Palettes.

UPDATE March 2013: The latest version is now 1.13 with support for LDD 4.3.5. If you have a previous version, you should download the new version. NOTE, installing a new version will remove your previously imported LDD-files, but hopefully it’s not too much work to import them again.

Note that this software requires MS Access 2003 or higher. If you don’t have it installed on your PC, you need to download and install the free Access 2003 runtime first. Read more in the link below.

Works good.

Fallout Online client (FOnline:2238)

This FOnline:2238 client is pre-configured by me, which makes it easier to run.
Try it if you have a problem with “official” client. I also recommend it for any new player.

» download FOnline:2238 client «

Installation instructions

  • Download and unzip the file FOnline2238.zip
  • Copy master.dat and critter.dat into data folder OR run FO2238Config.exe and in DataFiles
tab specify paths to master.dat and critter.dat.

FAQ

  • Where can I get master.dat and critter.dat from?
  • These files are part of Fallout 2.
To get them you can buy Fallout 2 on gog.com as well as in many other places.
  • OK, I have both dat files, paths are set up correctly, but I still can’t run FOnline!
  • Run Updater.exe. Try both FOnline.exe and FOnlineGL.exe.
If it still doesn’t work, this thread is the best place to look for help.
This client is preconfigured version of the official client. I prepare it by hand, so sometimes it may
be out-of-date. In such case simply run updater. If updater doesn’t work, you can get the files you
need individually from http://fonline2238.net/update/.

The official client can be downloaded from http://fonline2238.net/files/FOnline2238_Client.zip.
It’s updated automatically every hour, but more difficult to set up compared to my release.

Full list of differences between my release and official release
 – Added file Readme.txt with information about Master.dat and Critter.dat.
 – Added folder Manual with link to FOnline wiki.
 – Added file FOnline.cfg (so you don’t have to run FOConfig.exe), differences compared to
default configuration:

  • English language instead of Russian
  • Running is enabled by default
  • Fixed FPS is set to -15 instead of 100
  • Server host and port is configured properly
  • Updater paths are configured properly

– Added file FOnline2238.cfg (so you don’t have to run FO2238Config.exe unless you want to
have Master.dat and Critter.dat outside of data folder), differences compared to default configuration:

  • Displaying player names enabled

– Added file DataFiles2238.cfg with default paths to Master.dat and Critter.dat pointing to data folder.

Win7 cgminer setup guide

Submitted by Graet on

Forums:

cgminer is Ozcoin’s recommened miner.
The official thread for support and development of cgminer, the combined gpu and cpu miner written in c, cross platform for windows, linux and osx, based on the original code cpuminer.
Forum and download links here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0
This is a guide for windows – for those on linux or wanting to use cgminer on linux there is an excellent guide by kanoi included in the cgminer folder to setting up on a usb drive which can also be used to setup cgminer on hdd.
This guide assumes you have already created a worker and worker password. Please DO NOT use site user account password for miner passwords.
The guide
1: Download Windows binary from https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0
2: Extract to preffered location (I dump it on C: but will work fine from other partitions or drvies)
3: Open notepad
copy and paste the following without the “”s

@echo on
ECHO “Example cgminer miner startup file (set your own user and password)”
ECHO.
cgminer.exe -o http://pool:port -u username.workername -p password

set your own username.worker and password
save the notepad as cgminer.bat in the previously extracted cgminer folder
*Note1
4: Create shortcut to dekstop for cgminer.bat
5: Double click cgminer.bat, wait a moment while cgminer starts up
6: Look in cgminer console to see you are submitting shares
7: Check on site that workers are submitting shares, please be aware stats on the site can take up[ to 10minutes to update 🙂
*Note1: This is the most basic parameters needed to run cgminer
cgminer is very fully functioned and allows for overclocking, fan control and much much more from the .bat, command line or on the fly from within the program,
2 examples of my command lines
single card dedicated rig with failover set
cgminer.exe -o http://us.ozco.in:8332 -u graet.g9 -p 1234 -o http://eu.ozco.in:8332 -u graet.g9 -p 1234 -o http://au.ozco.in:8332 -u graet.g9 -p 1234 -I 9 –auto-fan –gpu-engine 900 –gpu-powertune 20 –donation 1
My desktop with 3 cards, I use the middle screen for tv and videos, so it has lower intensity set
cgminer.exe -o http://eu.ozco.in:8332 -u graet.20 -p p -I 8,6,9 –auto-fan –gpu-engine 890 –donation 1
I encourage users to check the README.txt in the cgminer folder and use the options that get them the best performance possible on their rigs 🙂
At step 4: a mate renamed the shortcut to “make money” made it easy to tell his wife how to restart cgminer if he was out and rig crashed, lol.
Hope this is a help 😀

for my 6950 in a .bat file I use:

cgminer.exe -o http://pool:port -u user -p password  -I 8 –auto-fan –gpu-engine 810-910 –gpu-vddc 1.05 –gpu-memdiff -125 –gpu-powertune 5

this allows for failover to backup pool
and gives me ~370Mhash/card

romextract

https://github.com/Plombo/romextract
================================================================================

Romextract is a collection of software for *nix systems (especially Linux).
Collectively, the programs can be used to extract ROMs from WAD files of Wii
Virtual Console games. These ROMs can be played on popular emulators for the
NES, SNES, TurboGrafx16/PC-Engine, Genesis, Master System, and Nintendo 64.

Authors
================================================================================

The programs that comprise romextract were written by various authors:
u8it - icefire (see https://github.com/icefire/u8it)
wadunpacker - BFGR, based on Zeventig by Segher
romc - Jurai, based on LZSS code by Haruhiko Okumura
ccfextract - Plombo
nes_rom_extract - Plombo

Function
================================================================================

Use wadunpacker to unpack each WAD file. In the extracted file, you will find
multiple ".app" files. The most important ones are:
* 00000001.app - For NES games, run nes_rom_extract on this file to extract the
ROM.
* 00000005.app - This is a U8 archive that can be extracted by u8it. It
contains several important files, depending on the type of game:
* html.arc OR emanual.arc OR man.arc - a U8 archive (extract it with u8it)
containing the HTML files for the game manual
* [TITLE].rom - for SNES games, this is a version of the ROM with messed-up
sound. There *might* be another file that is the original ROM with
correct sound, with the same name (referred to here as [TITLE]) but a
different extension.
* rom - for N64 games, if there is a file simply called "rom" with no
extension, it is the game ROM.
* romc - for N64 games, if there is a file called "romc", it is a compressed
version of the game ROM. In most cases, it can be uncompressed by the
"romc" utility included with romextract. Otherwise, there's not much you
can do.
* data.ccf - for Genesis and Master System games, this is an archive
containing the game ROM and possibly some other stuff. Extract it with
the "ccfextract" utility included with romextract.

Building
================================================================================

For now, I've just written a simple shell script to compile all of the programs.
Just run the shell script "build.sh" to compile. You will need gcc, zlib1g-dev,
and libssl-dev.

wwpacker 1.84

This is a set of tools and scripts to ease the steps for unpacking and packing
.W?D files with language, region string, video mode, ios flag, version and
region patched, fixing 001 check, 002 check or balance board support, changing
title id, or having the trucha signing bug restored.

The package setup/installer would create a set of shortcuts on start menu and
a shortcut on desktop for the drag and drop action of your file/folder.

The packer and unpacker included are from bfgr_tools_v039a.
It requires “common-key.bin” in the wwPacker folder.

To use the trucha signing bug restored feature, “cert.sys” is required in the
wwPacker folder. It can be found in WII_FSSYS folder which is created by the
wii FS dumper.

To replace the loader with a custom one (Custom NAND Loader!?), you should
rename the custom loader to “loader.bin” and put it in the wwPacker folder.

All .BAT scripts are tested in Win2000 and WinXP. I don’t guarantee they work
correctly in other OSes.

WARNING:
There’re risks to use the tools and scripts here to unpack, pack or modify
your .W?D files. In the worst case, it may brick your Wii.
I take no responsibilities for any damages.
Use the tools and scripts here only if you know what they are used for.

FAQ:
Q: How to use?
A: Drag & drop .W?D files onto __wwunpacker.bat

_wwpacker-Custom.bat : packing – custom IOS flag, custom region flag, custom title id, custom version, fake ticket data, WiiGF(Language, RegionString, Video, 001Fix, 002Fix, BalanceBoardFix)
_wwpacker-NoMod.bat : No Modification, just packing
_wwpacker-FakeSign.bat : packing – tik and tmd signed, fake ticket data
_wwpacker-JustSign.bat : Just packing with tik and tmd signed
_wwpacker-FreeTheBug.bat : packing – restore trucha bug, patch ES_identify, patch nand permissions (for IOS .W?D)
_wwpacker-DLCRegion.bat : packing – change DLC region code (for DLC .W?D)
_wwpacker-Loader.bat : packing – replace loader, Region-free, WiiGF(Language, RegionString, Video, 001Fix, 002Fix, BalanceBoardFix)

Special batch files:
Drag & drop ticket/cetk onto __wwunpacker-Content.bat
__wwunpacker-Content.bat : unpack the encrypted content files (from NUSD) which are placed along with the ticket/cetk and the tmd

Q: What’s the point of using .BAT scripts?
A: The scripts provide the support of drag & drop action.
You can finish your job in a few steps.

Q: Where is the “common-key.bin”?
A: Don’t ask me.

How to Survive on Private Trackers With a Low Upload Speed

1 – Leave your PC running for as long as you can :
Let’s assume you have  the low upload speed of 50 kb/s , and you will keep your PC running for 20 hours daily , do you know how much will you seed ?

Let’s do the math :   50 x 60 x 60 x 20 = 4320000 kb = 4.12 GB

Not bad at all , right ? that means an average of 123.6 GB monthly , with only 50 kb/s upload speed !

2 – Grab freeleech torrents :

Freeleech torrents don’t count towards your download and counts to towards your upload , and this includes 2 strategies :
a. Grab fresh freeleech torrents because those get lots of seeders , and don’t affect your download meter .
b. Prefer freeleech to other torrents . If you’re looking for a movie then check on multiple trackers maybe you can find it freeleech on one of them . Even if you found the format you want as a normal torrent and another close format in freeleech , grab the freeleech .
3 – Cross-seed :
You must understand first , what is cross-seeding ?
Cross-seeding is the process of downloading files from one tracker ( or having the file in any way )  and then use it to seed the same torrent on one or more private trackers .
How is this helpful ?
a. If you already have the file , download the .torrent from the tracker you want to seed at , chose the path of the file and let it check . In a minute it will start seeding without costing you any download count .
b. When a fresh popular torrent is out  , download it from a public tracker and seed it on all your private tracker that have that file . That’s another way to raise upload without affecting download .
c. Many trackers give bonus on the size of torrents you’re seeding , so you can cross-seed to get more bonus to buy upload credit , but we’ll get to that later .
But make sure to read the rules of the tracker before cross-seeding as it’s not allowed on some trackers .

4- Limit the number of trackers you use :
Don’t seed torrents on trackers you never use . It’s a waste of your precious upload speed to keep seeding on trackers you barely or never use . Focus on one general tracker ( preferably IPTorrents  or TorrentDay ) and a couple of other tracker for your interests . For example TehConnection if you’re interested in movies that can’t be found on usual general trackers , or Freshon if you’re interested in TV . Always search for everything first on that private tracker , since it’s much easier to build ratio there .
Don’t go around looking for trackers , you don’t need just to try them , make priorities and stick to them .
Also don’t use trackers that are hard to seed on , such as BitMe or Karagarga .

5 – Use bonus points :
Many tracker have a bonus points system that , in most cases , can be traded for upload credit . Some tracker use a system that gives bonus according to your total seeding size or every torrent’s size on it’s own . That’s when you use cross-seeding as explained above .
Other trackers use a system that give bonus according to number of seeding torrents and here comes the easiest trick in torrenting ! Just browse torrents and sort them by size from smaller files to bigger files . Download as much as you can from the smallest torrents and keep seeding them and getting lots of bonus ! easy ,  right ?

6 – Download smaller formats and versions :
If you find it hard to maintain a good ratio then don’t download huge files unless it’a a freeleech .  You can always find a smaller version of that file . If it’s an HD movie , you don’t have to download it in 1080 quality , 720 or 480 would be better . If you can avoid HD and watch it in XviD format then it would be much better . Use same strategy with games , today every popular game can be found ripped or repacked in less than half of it’s original size . Same thing goes for music , you don’t have to download .flac files unless you’re a freaking DJ ! and even if you are then 320 kb/s CBR or V0 VBR is more than enough .
Don’t download packs unless you’re willing to watch every movie or play every game in it , unless it’s freeleech off course .

7 – Donate to trackers :
Doesn’t seem like the best option if you’re going to get 10 GB upload credit for 10$ !
But on some trackers , you will get a VIP membership for donating and VIP members are immune to ratio rules .
For example , if you love games donate 20$ to BitGamer and get a VIP membership so you can download without worrying about ratio even if you don’t seed anything .

8 – Upload :
Maybe it’s weird to find a tip telling you to upload when you’re looking for a solution for low upload speed , but in the matter if fact it’s a good option . You see , if you’re not good with seeding then uploading files that you already have would help you a get upload credit , and even bonus points on some trackers ! at least you can be sure you will get upload credit greater than size of the file .

9 – Use ratio-less trackers :
Ratio-less trackers are those trackers that don’t care for ratio , but you have to seed your torrents for a fixed time ( usually 72 hours in one week ) and you can download as much as you can as long as you don’t hit and run ( stop seeding before seeding time is complete ) .

Most popular ratio-less trackers you can use :

General :
GFT – One of the best trackers ever with amazing speeds and content . Hard to get into .
FTN – May sound like a less probable option since it’s very hard to get an invite to it .
PreToMe – The best option in general ratio-less trackers . Said to be really close to GFT and easier to get .
AlphaOmega – A good tracker with nice content and pre-times .
FYT – An upcomming ratio-less tracker .

Movies :
PTN : the best choice , with a great content and good speeds , the most famous ratio-less movie tracker is a must-have if you don’t have a good upload speed . It’s not easy to join PTN , but they open application every now and then .
TheSwarm : A nice movie tracker with a nice tight community , but if you’re a movie maniac then it won’t work for you .

Games :
PWN Network : the one and only ratio-less games tracker . Mostly Nintendo and others consoles games , but it’s not like you have many options .

Music :
Libble : It’s not ratio-less in total but they use a weird system called ” Share Rank ” that is based on snatches , number of seeding torrents and ratio where a very high or very low ratio is not good .
Note that MP3 Scene is not ratio-less but there only one third of your download is counted so it’s a good choice .

TV Shows :
BTN : The best TV tracker ever , whatever you say is not enough to describe this great tracker .
Hard to get into , but sadly it’s the only ratio-less TV tracker .

10 – Get a seedbox :
The best option . You can get a seedbox for on month for a low price of 10-15$ and use it to buffer all of your accounts enough for a year or even more .
Using a seedbox you can use a seedbox to make a buffer of 2 TB on IPTorrents or 5 TB on TorrentDay in one month !
I would recommend getting a seedbox right away , that would save you time and effort .

Disable Do You want to change the color scheme to improve performance ? message

Sometimes this dialog box will pop up (see screenshot below). Every time it appears I select “Keep the current color scheme, and don’t show this message again”. Windows then reminds me again — either the next day or after reboot, or sometimes another 5 minutes later.
Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance?

Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance?

Windows has detected your computer’s performance is slow. This could be because there are not enough resources to run the Windows Aero color scheme. To improve performance, try changing the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic. Any change you make will be in effect until the next time you log on to Windows
  • Change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic
  • Keep the current color scheme, but ask me again if my computer continues to perform slowly
  • Keep the current color scheme, and don’t show this message again

Assuming you realize this message is informing you your system is low on resources and is asking you to disable Aero so it can keep performing at optimum speed,
  1. Go to the Start Menu and type Action Center on the Search box
  2. Start it (it should be the top entry, under the “Control Panel” group)
  3. On the left sidebar, click Change Action Center settings
  4. Untick the Windows Troubleshooting checkbox, under “Maintenance Messages”.
  5. Click the Ok button and you are done.
Here is a screenshot of the setting screen:
Alternatively:
  • You can try and keep this setting just as it is and switch to Basic desktop mode before launching the applications that usually fire up this Action Center notification. Or,
  • You can right click the icons you use to fire up these full screen applications, clicking properties and under the Compatibility tab tick Disable desktop composition. This will disable the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service during execution of this application which will increase system and video memory and avoid some application incompatibilities. A likely cause for your Action Center message if you have enough system and video memory but are stuill getting this message with certain games or full screen applications.
